It is reported that OpenAI is currently developing its first major consumer hardware: a premium smart speaker with integrated camera and facial recognition. The project aims to make the in-home experience smarter and more personal, where the device can recognize users, understand their actions, and become an active partner in everyday tasks. It's not just a simple voice assistant—it's described as a goal-oriented AI hub that can observe and provide more contextual assistance.
The design of the device is led by Jony Ive, former chief design officer of Apple, along with his design studio LoveFrom. In collaboration with OpenAI, it is expected to have an elegant appearance similar to modern home devices, but with more advanced AI capabilities. It is estimated to be priced in the $200 to $300 range and could launch in early 2027, as part of the company's broader plans to enter the hardware ecosystem.
The new camera-enabled smart speaker is being described as an “active participant” in the home—capable of authenticating purchases using facial recognition and providing personalized assistance based on what it sees and hears. However, along with the innovation comes a serious concern about privacy and data security, especially with the concept of an always-on, always-watching assistant. With OpenAI entering this field, it is clear that a new phase of competition between large tech companies is beginning, and the integration of artificial intelligence into modern life is deepening.
