A senior citizen died and more than 200 houses were damaged after flash flood caused by heavy rain and the effects of the Shear Line in Sagay City on midnight Saturday, January 31, 2026, according to a report by George Cabalang, Operation and Warning Officer of the Sagay City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO).
According to data from the CDRRMO as of February 2, 2026, there are 6,803 residents from 1,776 families temporarily living in evacuation centers after the local government implemented preemptive evacuation at around 7 p.m. The evacuees are from the barangays of Fabrica, Puey, Paraiso, Himoga-an Baybay, and Poblacion II.
Cabalang said the evacuation was necessary due to the rapid rise in water levels in the Himoga-an and Tan-ao Rivers, especially for those living near the riverbanks. It rained heavily from 2 p.m. and flash floods hit the five barangays around 8 p.m.
Shared videos show the rescue operations of the CDRRMO in Purok Manipolon, Barangay Puey, while other residents in Purok Mabuhay, Barangay Fabrica, are stuck in muddy roads. A baptism was canceled because the flash flood washed away equipment and prepared food. The senior citizen who died was also from Barangay Fabrica.
According to the CDRRMO, there are 101 houses that were completely destroyed and 175 that were partially damaged. The local government is currently conducting flashing and clearing operations, and distributing clean water to evacuees and other residents in the affected barangay. There is still no data on damaged crops and affected animals in the fields.
