Known as one of the greatest players in PBA history, “El Presidente” Ramon Fernandez added another honor to his colorful career after the league's Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP) trophy was officially named after him.
Fernandez, the all-time leader in 19 championships, will be part of every subsequent winner of the award. San Miguel center June Mar Fajardo was the first recipient of this honor, and Fernandez expressed his deep gratitude for the recognition.
According to reports, the PBA Press Corps' decision to name the trophy is a tribute to Fernandez's unparalleled contributions to the league. Even after his career ended, his achievements remain indelible in the PBA's record.
“Thank you very much, I still remember yesterday,” said Fernandez. He still holds the record for points (18,996), rebounds (8,652), defensive rebounds (6,435), blocks (1,853), free throws made (3,848), and minutes played (36,624). These numbers are also reflected in the trophy design, of which he was also presented with a replica.
The Ramon Fernandez Finals MVP trophy features Fernandez's image and is 19 inches tall to symbolize his 19 championships. The circular base of 19 inches symbolizes his jersey number, while the diameter of 6.04 inches highlights his 6-foot-4 height. It symbolizes the standard of excellence and legacy that Fernandez has demonstrated and will continue to be followed by future MVPs in the league.
