A happy bathing session between friends in the river turned into tragedy after a 16-year-old girl was swept away by strong currents in the Calibuyo River, Tanza, Cavite.
The victim was identified as Lyka Sim Costales, a resident of Brgy. Calibuyo. According to the report, she went with friends to bathe in the river despite heavy rain due to the southwest monsoon and typhoon. Neighbors reportedly advised them not to proceed, but they did not heed their advice.
While bathing, the water suddenly rose and the current became stronger, causing Lyka to be swept away. Tanza Police, CDRRMO, and Philippine Coast Guard immediately conducted a search and rescue. Rescuers had difficulty due to water lilies washed away by the river, but at around 4 p.m., the girl's lifeless body was found.
Authorities remind: Do not bathe in rivers or streams during heavy rain or storms to avoid this tragedy.
