A live-in partner and security guard were injured after their motorcycle crashed into the side of an ambulance at the intersection of UN Avenue and San Marcelino Street in Manila, Monday morning, February 23.
According to initial investigation, the couple were on their way to work when the accident occurred. The force of the collision broke and crushed the left rear of the ambulance. One of the couple sustained injuries while the other was only knocked unconscious.
The ambulance originated from Barangay Mamatid, Cabuyao, Laguna and was on its way to a hospital in Quezon City after transporting a patient to the Philippine General Hospital. The driver, Bely Matubis, said they had already advanced through the intersection when the motorcycle quickly chased them. Two patients inside the ambulance were hit by glass from the broken glass, but their condition was not serious.
According to the male rider's stepfather, the victim was even able to call his mother via video call even though he was lying on the road. "My wife just woke me up and said, 'Let me go to the UN because they had an accident on their motorcycle,'" said Demitrio Capacio.
The injured couple were rushed to the hospital for further treatment while authorities continue to investigate the cause of the collision. The incident reminds all motorists and pedestrians to be cautious on the road, especially at intersections.
