The Department of Energy (DOE) has officially recognized the BMW 520i Hybrid and BMW 735i Hybrid as Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV) in the Philippines. This important step strengthens BMW's position in the local luxury car market, especially as the brand's other hybrid models are set to be launched. Both models use a 48-volt hybrid system, which provides a better balance of performance and efficiency.
The BMW 520i Hybrid is powered by a 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo engine supported by an electric motor, with a combined output of 208 horsepower and 330 Nm of torque. Meanwhile, the BMW 735i Hybrid has a 3.0-liter inline-6 TwinPower Turbo engine that produces 286 horsepower and 425 Nm of torque. In both vehicles, the electric system can power the car for short periods of time using the lithium-ion battery while coasting, a key requirement to achieve HEV classification.
With this recognition, both models are now eligible for benefits reserved for hybrid vehicles, including number coding exemption and lower tariffs. This results in more competitive pricing and greater value for buyers seeking luxury with sustainability. Overall, BMW proves that it is possible to combine prestige, performance, and eco-friendly innovation in a single vehicle.
