Rioters and police clashed at the Ayala Bridge in Manila on Sunday, September 21. A trailer truck was set on fire and used as a barricade against police. A police motorcycle was also seen burning under the truck.
Videos have gone viral on TikTok showing some rioters with balaclavas and cloth covering their faces. As police advance, rocks, bottles, and other debris are thrown at them. Another man slams his hand into an officer's shield.
In a livestream, the rioters were asked why they were rioting. They could be heard shouting: “They're letting us in!” “To rob!” and “The poor people are drowning in the flood!” They had no clear connection to the large rallies that took place in Luneta and EDSA.
The large protests dubbed “Baha sa Luneta” and “Trillion Peso March” remained peaceful. They included groups from the church, civil society, and several personalities demanding accountability in connection with the flood control scandal that has reached ₱1 trillion.
As of now, the Manila Police District has not yet released a statement regarding the damage and extent of the chaos at Ayala Bridge.
