Electronic Arts (EA) has canceled the highly anticipated Black Panther video game after closing Cliffhanger Games — the studio that focused on game development. The announcement comes amid ongoing changes in the company's direction.
The game was first announced in 2023 and is planned to be a single-player, open-world action-adventure game set in the world of Wakanda. Cliffhanger Games, a Seattle-based studio, is building the project with veteran developers. But since the initial announcement, there have been few updates on its development.
According to an email from Laura Miele, president of EA Entertainment, this is part of EA's plan to focus on bigger business opportunities and popular franchises such as Battlefield, The Sims, Skate, and Apex Legends. As a result, they are also moving away from some licensed IP such as Black Panther.
Despite the cancellation of this game, the partnership between EA and Marvel continues. Motive Studios is still working on the Iron Man game, and it is possible that it will lead other Marvel projects in the future. This is one of many layoffs and project cancellations in the gaming industry this 2025.
