OPM icon Freddie Aguilar passed away at the age of 72 this Tuesday, May 27, according to a report by News5.
Aguilar is famous for the song “Anak” which has sold over 33 million copies and has been translated into 51 languages. It is one of the most popular OPM songs in the world.
In addition, his version of “Bayan Ko,” which became a symbol of the fight for democracy during the 1986 People Power Revolution, also became popular.
On May 17, 2025, he was awarded as “Most Outstanding International Singer, Composer, Performer” at the 10th Southeast Asian Achievement Award.
In 2018, former President Rodrigo Duterte appointed him as Presidential Adviser on Culture and the Arts and a member of the NCCA. He is married to wife Jovie, and they have children.
