The mayor of South Upi, Maguindanao del Sur, Reynalbert Insular, along with his wife Janet, were arrested in Parang, Maguindanao del Norte for murder. They were arrested by the CIDG following a warrant issued on May 19.
They are believed to be behind the ambush on August 2, 2024, which killed vice mayor Roldan Benito and his security aide Weng Marcos. Benito's wife, son, and a student were injured in the incident.
No bail was recommended for the two. According to the CIDG chief, the arrest is proof that the police are serious about investigating and punishing criminals. Insular was elected vice mayor of South Upi on May 12.
