A 31-year-old man, Alvin “Nano” Dela Cruz, died after he was mistaken for a house-escape and shot by his 72-year-old neighbor in Barangay Maybunga, Pasig City in the early hours of May 13. According to CCTV, Nano entered the alley near the suspect's house—who immediately became suspicious of him.
A witness said there was a heated argument between the two. Following this, the old man pulled out a gun while his grandchildren carried a stick. Nano was hit in the side and was heard begging for his life. "I have a son, two years old," he said, but he was ignored.
The victim's brother also arrived and tried to settle the dispute, but a gun was pointed at him. As he turned away, a gunshot rang out. He immediately asked for help from the barangay. When they returned to the area, Nano was found lying face down and dead.
According to Nano's live-in partner, he is not a thief. He was also not seen carrying a weapon on CCTV. “Maybe he was just looking for something,” he said. The old man just misunderstood. He added, “My partner has no record of trouble in Maybunga.”
Nano's family is crying out for justice. He left behind his two-year-old son. The suspect surrendered a few hours after the incident and is now facing a homicide charge.
