Subaru is making waves in the motorsports world again after its performance arm STI announced a bold move for the 2026 racing season. It aims to make the Subaru BRZ GT300 more competitive by retiring the long-standing EJ20 turbo engine and introducing a more powerful engine.
Instead of following the usual modern design, STI chose to revive the EG33 3.0-liter flat-6, an engine last used nearly three decades ago. This classic powerplant has been redeveloped and fitted with a twin turbo setup to keep up with the high level of competition in the Super GT GT300.
The EG33 flat-6 is known for its durability and power, making it a favorite among Subaru enthusiasts. With its aluminum block structure and sturdy internal components, it has proven capable of handling extremely high boost and power—an important attribute in the intense world of racing.
The return of the old engine is not just a matter of nostalgia, but a strategic decision to achieve higher speed and consistency against opponents. With the help of the new configuration, the BRZ GT300 is expected to be more aggressive and effective in every race.
As Subaru celebrates its 15th year in the Super GT GT300, this campaign is led by veteran management and supported by a strong lineup of drivers. Combining experience and innovation, the brand's ambition is clear: to capture the season championship and once again prove their racing engineering prowess.
