Cebu province has formed a task force that will focus on the province's flood control and drainage system. Its goal is proactive mitigation against disasters.
According to Governor Pam Baricuatro, this is necessary after Typhoon Tino caused severe flooding, destroying homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods in many areas. She also urged the implementation of the Metro Cebu Integrated Flood Control and Drainage System Master Plan.
The task force is led by Baricuatro and co-chaired by Vice Governor Glenn Soco, along with other officials. Their work includes hazard mapping, watershed management, engineering solutions, zoning policies, and climate adaptation measures.
The group's duties also include reviewing existing drainage systems, waterways, river basins, creeks, canals, and flood-prone areas. They will also ensure that projects comply with national standards and best practices.
In addition, the task force will also develop early warning and monitoring systems to anticipate disasters earlier, especially since Cebu was severely affected by Typhoon Tino which claimed more than 180 lives.
