The front of a wing van truck was crushed after it crashed into a light pole at the intersection of Mindanao and Congressional Avenue in Quezon City, early Wednesday morning. The force of the collision broke the wing door lock and spilled nearly 900 sacks of flour the truck was carrying.
The driver was hit in the head while a passenger was injured in the leg. Another passenger died at the hospital after jumping out of the truck before it hit a pole.
According to the driver, they were coming from Pampanga and heading to Taytay, Rizal when the truck lost its brakes while turning onto Congressional Avenue. “When I stepped on the brakes, it didn’t bite anymore, it accelerated. My second step, it was gone… I wanted to avoid the car but I actually hit it… then I hit the pole,” he said.
Two cars were involved in the incident but the drivers were safe. Traffic was slightly heavy but returned to normal after the truck and the flour sacks were moved to the outer lane.
Police are investigating whether the accident was caused by mechanical error or if the truck driver dozed off.
