The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) reported that up to 1,454 Filipinos have been rescued from scam hubs in Southeast Asia in the past two years.
Recently, nearly 200 Filipino victims of human trafficking requested help to return home after being rescued from an illegal scam hub in Myanmar. Many of them crossed over to Thailand where DMW officials assisted.
According to DMW Undersecretary Bernard Olalia, among those rescued were 376 from Cambodia, 399 from Laos, and 764 from Myanmar. In total, 1,454 compatriots returned home, including men and women who were forced to work in illegal operations.
DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac expressed gratitude to the authorities of Myanmar and Thailand for helping Filipinos. He also said that cooperation will continue to prevent human trafficking and scam operations in the region.
The rescued Filipinos are currently being assisted by the government for repatriation and recovery from this experience.
