BYD is gradually changing direction—from being a full electric vehicle (EV) brand to focusing on plug-in hybrid technology. This is evident not only in the new models launched in the Philippines, but also in other countries. One of them is the Atto 2, which was first released as an electric SUV, but now has a Super DM-i hybrid powertrain.
Released in early 2025, the Atto 2 DM-i is proof that BYD wants to boost its sales worldwide, especially in Europe, where the hybrid market is growing rapidly. Sales of plug-in hybrids increased by almost 54.5% in August, so BYD also wants to keep up with this trend.
The new Atto 2 DM-i has an estimated 90 km electric range and up to 1,000 km combined range. According to the report, it is possible that it will use the same engine as the Seal 5 DM-i with 179 to 197 horsepower and 8.3 kWh to 18.3 kWh battery capacity.
To accommodate the engine, the SUV's design has also been changed. There is a larger grille for the cooling system and a new bumper design, while the side vents have been removed.
For now, it is unlikely that BYD Philippines will release the Atto 2 DM-i because the Sealion 5 DM-i is already filling the same role here. It is more likely that the Atto 2 EV will simply be shipped to the Philippines from Europe. If this happens, it is expected to be more affordable—possibly in the range of ₱1.8 million to ₱2 million depending on the variant.
