A fire in a three-story residential-commercial building in Barangay Pio Del Pilar, Makati City on Saturday night left six people injured. Some residents were forced to jump from the rooftop to escape the flames.
One of the injured was JR Balano, the owner of an apartment on the third floor. According to him, they woke up to the screams of a fire and when they went down to the second floor, they were trapped in the fire so they climbed to the rooftop and jumped from there to save themselves.
Ivy Mendoza's unit was also affected, and she immediately put her one-year-old nephew first. She said she panicked but immediately carried the child out to be saved.
According to Fire Inspector Rodolfo Aguilar, about 30 fire trucks responded. The firefighters had difficulty because the hardware store on the first floor was padlocked, so they had to break the door to enter.
The estimated cost of damage is ₱2 million and 40 families are affected. Those affected are temporarily staying at a nearby school while the cause of the fire is still being investigated.
