Meta will begin using human conversations in its AI chatbot to personalize ads and content on Facebook and Instagram, the company announced Wednesday.
Starting October 7, users will receive a notification about this change, and it will be effective on December 16, 2025. Meta will use AI interactions – by voice or text – similar to the way they track likes, shares, and posts to learn about users' interests and which ads are most relevant.
For example, if you talk about outdoor activities with AI, you might see recommendations for hiking groups, posts about trails from friends, or ads for hiking equipment.
Meta said that conversations about sensitive topics like religion, sexual orientation, politics, and health will not be used for ad targeting. Users also have control over how personalized the ads and content they see is.
AI interactions will also be used in WhatsApp accounts connected to users' Meta accounts for personalization. Starting with the rollout, most regions will experience the update immediately, while Europe and the UK will follow due to stricter privacy regulations.
