The P10 billion solar farm in Tuy, Batangas has been officially opened and comes with a large battery storage system. President Marcos led the opening of Citicore Solar Batangas 1, which has a 197-megawatt-peak solar power plant and 320-MW-hour battery energy storage system (BESS).
The plant can power 158,000 households and reduce nearly 265,000 tons of carbon emissions per year. The solar panels operate during the day, while the BESS provides excess or stored energy at night or during peak usage times.
The project is located in the barangays of Lumbangan and Luntal in Tuy. It is the first baseload solar farm in the country that can supply electricity beyond the normal daylight hours, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
It also combines solar power and agriculture through agrivoltaics, where crops are grown under and around solar panels. The land is more productive, farmers' incomes increase, and food security is strengthened.
The company aims to achieve 5,000 megawatts of renewable energy by 2030. Meanwhile, the government targets to increase the share of renewables to 35% by 2030 and 50% by 2040.
