
A rights group in Indonesia reported that 20 people were missing after violent protests spread to several cities. The protests began over the luxury and privileges of lawmakers, but escalated after a delivery driver was killed after being run over by an armored police vehicle.
Six people have died since the protests began last week. This has forced President Prabowo Subianto to back down on giving perks to lawmakers.
According to the KontraS group, 23 people were reported missing, but 20 people were still missing as of Monday. Most of them were from Bandung, Depok, and various districts of Jakarta.
The fines and costs faced by those arrested are more than ₱4,000, according to local reports. In total, more than 1,200 people have been arrested in Jakarta since August 25, most of them youths. There have also been several Molotov attacks and burning of bus stops.
The United Nations has called for a thorough investigation into the authorities' use of excessive force against protesters.
