The P55 million flood control project in Bulacan was discovered by President Marcos Jr. as a ghost project. During his inspection in Baliuag, he did not find a single hollow block or cement, even though the project was said to be completed. The President was furious and threatened serious charges against the officials and contractors involved.
According to Marcos, there was falsification of documents because the project was declared complete even though nothing was done. He stated that those behind it could be charged with economic sabotage and the company SYMS Construction Trading would be immediately blacklisted.
The President added that the practice of contractors who sell contracts and leave the project to sub-contractors must be stopped. Because of this, many projects end up being substandard or unfinished projects. He also urged the public to report anomalies in government projects to ensure that the public's money goes to the right projects.
The report revealed that there are more than 6,000 flood control projects without clear details on what the construction covers. There are also projects with the same contract value even in different areas, and many provinces that are not flood-prone are awarded more projects.
Marcos promised to continue the investigation and hold accountable all those proven to be involved in ghost and anomalous projects. “We will not let this go,” the President stressed.
