Senators Want to Tighten Online Gambling in the Philippines

The senators are calling for tighter regulation of online gambling, because even with the new limits, operators could still find a way to get in using e-wallet services.

According to Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian, the gaming regulator and Central Bank must ensure that the order to separate e-wallets from gambling sites is consistently and fully implemented. “This is not just a simple regulation; it is the government's duty to protect every Filipino against the vice that destroys families,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sen. Bam Aquino was pleased with the order to remove the connection of e-wallets from e-gambling, but he insisted that there should be a total ban. “If this happens, the online gambling industry in the Philippines will definitely be weakened. But what we are really looking for is complete ban,” Aquino said.

E-wallet companies were given 48 hours to remove icons and links to gambling platforms. Aquino said there is a double standard in the policy—gambling is prohibited within 300 meters of schools and churches, but mobile gambling apps that are almost in everyone's pocket are allowed.

Many senators, including Juan Miguel Zubiri, support this call after highlighting the negative impact of online gambling on Filipino families.
