The much-anticipated fight between PNP Chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III and Acting Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte ended in Torre's victory because Baste did not show up. The event took place yesterday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum and raised P16.3 million for charity.
According to Torre, he didn't wait for Duterte after he confirmed that he wouldn't attend. "Many paid and came, so we went ahead with it," he explained. The event aims to raise funds for those affected by the southwest monsoon and other calamities.
Aside from cash donations that reached P16.3M, many companies and individuals donated truckloads of rice and canned goods. Torre shared that these will be immediately distributed through the DSWD and Philippine Red Cross. Another company donated an entire wing van of canned goods.
Meanwhile, Duterte tried to reschedule the fight, but Torre refused due to his workload and the need for immediate assistance. “We can't wait for his schedule, we have more important things to do,” Torre insisted.
Ultimately, Torre said that the fight was an opportunity to help. Although many said the fight was “unnecessary,” he assured that the goal was important: to raise aid for those in need.
