A major fire in Barangay Central, Quezon City on Saturday night destroyed 30 houses housing 25 families or 84 people. A barangay guard was injured after slipping and falling while helping to put out the fire.
According to the official, the fire was caused by a damaged electrical cable that had been wet by rain. A spark sparked on the cable, and when water was poured on it, the fire grew even bigger until a gas tank exploded.
One of the residents, Esterilina Mendoza, 69, was led out of their burning house by her grandchildren. They saved nothing but a few important papers. She is now asking for help to start over because they have no other source of income.
According to his son, Wilfredo Mendoza, they have experienced three fires but only now has their house completely burned down. While losing their home is painful, he said it is more important that the family is safe.
The fire was extinguished around 9 p.m.. The families affected by the fire are temporarily staying in a covered court in the barangay.
