Malacañang has issued a warning against the spread of AI-generated fake news, after Senator Ronald Dela Rosa and Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte shared a video showing students allegedly supporting Vice President Sara Duterte. It was later revealed that it was created by artificial intelligence and that the students in the video are not real.
According to Presidential Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro, disinformation or false information should not come from government officials. She said, "public trust is lost when leaders themselves spread fake news."
Castro also explained that officials who actively participate in spreading false news, especially if they express an opinion on it, may be punished. libel or defamation cases may be considered, depending on the overall situation.
Amid this issue, Sara Duterte said that there is nothing wrong with sharing AI-generated videos as long as it is not used for business purposes. According to her, it is okay if the purpose is support and not for profit. At the same time, Sara also denied the allegations that led to her impeachment.
In a separate matter, Sara Duterte revealed that there are troll farms that are trying to destroy her. One of these is the OpenAI-reported campaign “Covert IO: Operation High Five,” which is allegedly led by Comm&Sense Inc., a PR firm connected to Jaeger Tanco. However, she said, she does not plan to file a lawsuit because "the AI itself has revealed the truth."
