The three siblings in Oviedo, Spain were rescued from the home where they had been confined by their parents since 2021, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. They were forced to wear face masks and not leave the house for almost four years.
According to local media such as El Comercio, El Mundo, and ABC, the children—8-year-old twins and a 10-year-old—were finally released last week. Although they were not hungry, authorities said they were dirty and seemed to have no idea about the real world....
One of the investigators said that when the children were released, "they took deep breaths as if they had just breathed in the fresh air." They were also excited by simple things like touching the grass.
“Their condition is so shocking,” according to a source from El Mundo. “When we took them out of the garden, they just saw a snail, they were so happy.”
The neighbor reported on April 14 after noticing that the children were not attending school. As a result, the police conducted an investigation. The parents were arrested and are now facing charges of domestic violence and child abandonment.
