Cebu City's rivers are at risk of dying due to household waste. According to the 2025 River Assessment Report of the Cebu City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CCENRO), common soap sachets, dirty water, and organic waste are some of the main causes of river pollution.
Heaps of plastic sachets were observed in the Lahug River, especially near the spring used by residents. In the Mahiga River, dirty water from washing and other household chores is directly dumped into the river. In the Bulacao River, excessive organic waste is causing algae growth in the water.
Although many rivers are polluted, there are still some clean and safe like the Cotcot River, which has clear water and animals that are sensitive to pollution. This shows how pollution is worse in the more populated areas of the city.
The report emphasized the need to educate communities on proper waste disposal. It also encouraged barangay leaders to be active in protecting the environment, especially rivers that are sources of drinking water.
