Hundreds of persons deprived of liberty (PDL) at the Malabon City Jail staged a noise barrage on Thursday afternoon in protest of alleged food problems and chaotic visitation system. They even threw objects like bottles and cardboard from the rooftop of the jail.
According to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), the noise started around 2 p.m. and lasted for about two hours. BJMP officials and Malabon City Mayor Jeannie Sandoval immediately arrived to talk to the PDLs and hear their grievances.
Mayor Sandoval promised that the Local Government of Malabon would provide food packs containing rice, coffee, and canned goods for nearly ₱500 worth of PDLs. According to the mayor, PDLs still have the right to be heard and supported by the government.
Meanwhile, the former jail warden has been removed from his post and temporarily replaced by Jail Chief Inspector Lucky Dionisio. According to the BJMP, they will conduct a investigation into the PDLs' complaint, especially since this is the third noise barrage inside the jail.
No injuries or deaths were reported in the incident, but complaints are still being investigated to ensure the well-being of those detained.
