Alex Eala's historic first-round win at the US Open drew praise from his coaches for his display of courage and determination.
Eala became the first Filipino to win a Grand Slam singles match after defeating 14th seed Clara Tauson of Denmark, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (13/11).
According to coach Joan Bosch from the Rafa Nadal Academy, "It was a great win. Alex's first set was one of the best he's ever played." Even though Tauson was down in the third set, 5-1, Eala showed a fierce fight and continued to the tiebreaker which he also took home.
Assistant coach Lluc Bauzà also expressed his joy, highlighting Eala's long fitness training. "We have been preparing her condition for a long time. She is moving well and her shoulder recovery is complete before the US Open," Bauzà said.
Eala has two days of rest before her next match. She will face the winner of the match between Cristina Bucsa (World No. 95) and Claire Liu of America.
