TikTok has stopped running real money gambling ads in the Philippines starting today, August 22. According to the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), this is a major step to make the internet safer for Filipinos.
According to TikTok, their ad policy is focused on protecting users. Before allowing gambling ads, they must have the proper license and be shown only to those aged 25 and over. As for social casino games that do not involve real money, they are prohibited for those under 18 years old.
For now, TikTok has paused all real money gambling ads while awaiting clear guidance from Philippine authorities.
Meanwhile, Rep. Leila de Lima said the only effective way to combat the ill effects of online gambling is a total ban. She said, whether legal or illegal, it is addictive and destroys the families and futures of many Filipinos.
PAGCOR also acknowledged that many Filipinos do not know the difference between legal and illegal gambling. De Lima called on the government to find other sources of funding that will not harm the mental health, family, and morality of Filipinos.
