UP's 6'10 rookie Israel Friday, age 19, passed away after suddenly collapsing during the team's practice on Tuesday.
According to the UP Office of Athletics and Sports Development, Friday was immediately taken to the nearest hospital. Despite the efforts of doctors, he was declared dead.
Friday is from Nigeria and a new recruit of the Fighting Maroons. He is known for his on-court skills as a center and is one of the expected players to strengthen UP's lineup.
The cause of death is still being investigated. The university is also in contact with his family and has provided full support.
Israel Friday is a huge loss for the basketball community and the entire UP Fighting Maroons.
