Good news for new motorcycle owners. Starting February 15, 2026, new motorcycles that come straight from the showroom will have a five-year registration validity, according to a statement from the Department of Transportation (DOTr). The policy aims to make owning a new vehicle more convenient and hassle-free for the first five years from the date of purchase.
According to Transportation Secretary Giovanni “Banoy” Lopez, the approved plan by PBBM aims to avoid long lines at the LTO, issues of fixers, and other forms of corruption. He added that the extension of the registration validity is priority for the convenience of the public, while maintaining the integrity and orderliness of vehicles.
The DOTr explained that the five-year registration validity is only for brand-new vehicles and motorcycles. After this period, the registration will return to annual renewal. This includes a mandatory roadworthiness inspection in the fourth year to ensure that vehicles on the road are safe and in good condition.
Sec. Lopez added, “In the 6th year, the registration must be renewed every year. As the vehicle ages, it becomes less reliable due to depreciation and wear and tear. That is why it is important that the LTO still has a comprehensive roadworthiness check.”
The DOTr and LTO are expected to issue a Department Order and Memorandum Circular that will set out in detail the 5-year vehicle registration policy, which is targeted to be implemented on February 15, 2026. This is a step to make the registration system for new motorcycles in the country more modern, streamlined, and user-friendly.
