McLaren has unveiled its new MCL40 Formula 1 car at a private Barcelona Shakedown, featuring a one-off black and chrome stealth livery. The temporary design provides a first glimpse of the 2026 title-defending challenger, while deliberately hiding the team's official colours until the formal launch of the season.
This is not just a simple visual experiment. The reigning champions are using the five-day shakedown as a strategic phase to test new regulations, including the 55% livery coverage requirement, vinyl durability, and heat management. Notable changes to the car include a revised chassis, drooped nose, and ramped sidepods, which are clear indications of the team's serious adaptation to the new era of Formula 1.
McLaren also chose to postpone the first on-track run until the second day to allow more time for design and simulation development. Led by Lando Norris, who will wear the number one plate for the first time, and Oscar Piastri, the team enters the 2026 reset with disciplined and calculated confidence—a message clearly conveyed by their quiet but powerful debut in Barcelona.
