MMDA Clears Tondo Roads: Enough with Being Hard Headed

MANILA – The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) conducted a clearing operation on several roads in Tondo, Manila on January 14, 2026. According to Gabriel Go, head of the MMDA Special Operations Group–Strike Force, this is part of the agency's ongoing efforts to keep main roads clear, particularly Mel Lopez Boulevard or Road 10.

“We'll clear it today, we'll be back tomorrow. After a few days, it'll be there again,” said Go. “We have instances where we towed the car, then when we returned, same place, same parking… We have to be enough with being hard headed.”

The operation included the removal of street vendors and even the feast decorations of Santo Niño that were blocking the road. One of the vendors objected when the MMDA took away his stall. “We have no other place to go. That's to find a job. We'll be more afraid if we don't have anything to eat,” he said.

The tricycles and several vehicles also did not survive. There was a tricycle without a plate number and operated by a driver without a license. “This is my only livelihood, they took my livelihood away. What will I feed my five children? I don't have a budget,” said the driver. Several motorists who violated traffic rules were also issued tickets.

The MMDA admitted that they are not targeting the poor in the clearing operation. “Our clearing is not anti-poor. When we clear you, it is because you have a violation,” Go explained. At the same time, the Manila Police District is working with barangays to promote discipline in Tondo. In total, 65 motorists received tickets and 18 vehicles were impounded in Tumana, Marikina.
