KTM has issued a worldwide recall regarding weak and potentially breakable sidestand springs, after many owners reported sudden engine stalling while riding the motorcycle, especially on rough terrain and adventure rides. The problem is connected to the sidestand switch which can activate the safety kill switch when the sidestand is lowered slightly.
According to KTM, their quality inspections have discovered that engine vibrations can cause sidestand spring breakage. The recall covers 2025 to 2026 KTM 390 models. Affected owners are instructed to go to an authorized KTM dealer for free replacement of the sidestand spring and installation of rubber protection.
While waiting for the repair, KTM advised customers to temporarily secure the sidestand with a rubber band or similar support. The service visit also included the installation of a new sidestand sensor retaining plate, which adjusts the trigger range of the sidestand switch to prevent unexpected engine shutdown.
In the Philippines, some owners have long been recommended to software update to reduce the sensitivity of the system, or to use an aftermarket sidestand switch bypass kit which usually costs around USD 12 + shipping. However, the recall launched by KTM is now an official solution.
Meanwhile, there is still no official announcement from KTM Austria on who will be the new KTM PH distributor, although there are rumors that Trimotors Philippines may take over from Lucky MAPI. According to Sarah Parzer, KTM's Senior Integrated Communication Manager, Filipino customers can still bring their affected motorcycles to the nearest authorized KTM or Husqvarna dealers for necessary service.
