Music streaming service Spotify said it has disabled accounts connected to a piracy activist hacker group that claimed to have hacked and backed up millions of music files and metadata from the platform.
According to the group Anna’s Archives, they have scraped 86 million Spotify tracks and metadata for 256 million tracks as part of their plan to create an open music preservation archive. The group also said that these files represent nearly 99.6% of Spotify listens and 99.9% of all tracks on the service.
Spotify confirmed that it had immediately identified and closed the accounts involved in unlawful scraping. According to the company, there was no impact to users, and that it has implemented new security safeguards to combat anti-copyright attacks and continue to protect artists and creators.
