The Department of Health (DOH) recorded 28 fireworks-related injuries (FWRI) as of Christmas Day. According to the latest FWRI Surveillance Report, eight new cases were recorded as of 4 a.m. on December 25 from 62 sentinel hospitals.
From December 21 to the early hours of December 25, the number of cases was 56 during the same period last year. Of the total, 19 (68%) were 19 years old and below, while 9 (32%) were 20 and above. Most of the damage was caused by five star, boga, and triangle.
The DOH advised the injured to wash the wound with clean running water, immediately go to the nearest hospital or health center, and get a tetanus shot. For immediate assistance, call 911. LGUs were also encouraged to hold community fireworks displays handled by professionals. Meanwhile, the PNP has intensified operations against illegal fireworks, warning that those who violate Republic Act No. 7183 (Firecracker Law will be prosecuted.
