The Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong confirmed that a Filipina OFW died after a massive fire hit several high-rise buildings in Tai Po on Wednesday.
In a post, the consulate said it was sad to announce the passing of the OFW who had been working in Hong Kong for a long time for his family in the Philippines. They extended their sympathy to the victim's relatives and friends.
DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac and OWWA Administrator PY Caunan personally visited the family. Cacdac assured that the government would provide the biggest assistance it could. He also said that they spoke to the OFW's 10-year-old son, who wants to become a firefighter so that "no one dies in fires."
According to Cacdac, the Filipina OFW died while taking care of her employer's 5-year-old son. He called her a hero who sacrificed her life for her job.
In the latest report by Consul General Romulo Victor Israel Jr., he said 70 out of 83 Filipinos registered in the burned building are safe. The Filipina OFW is among the 23 Filipinos affected, and among the 128 fatalities according to the latest count.
