PNP Ready to Ensure Security for New Protest

The PNP is ready to provide security if another Trillion Peso March goes ahead, according to acting PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. He said the police are used to large gatherings, especially in Metro Manila where there are several rallies every day.

Nartatez assured that they respect freedom of expression, but it must be used with responsibility. He also said that the PNP is continuing to improve security operations for large and small mobilizations.

Up to 90,000 people participated in 119 anti-corruption protests nationwide. In Metro Manila, there were at least 12 major assemblies, including at the People Power Monument and the San Sebastian-Recto area. While the protests are being ordered, the search for suspects in the flood control scam also continues.

Nartatez mentioned that there has been progress in the cases stemming from the previous protests, where more than 200 people are facing charges under BP 880, arson, physical injuries and inciting to sedition. He said there could be a third Trillion Peso March if no “big fish” are jailed.

Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said that if she were not part of the cabinet, she would join the protest against corruption. She insisted that no funds are wasted in the DOE and that private sector projects are strictly monitored.

Meanwhile, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso condemned the vandalism in parts of Manila after the rally. Spray-painted “Oust Marcos-Duterte” and “ACAB” were seen on walls and structures despite warnings from the city government against desecrating public places.
