Family of OFW Hero in HK Fire Asks for Help

The family and siblings of Filipino OFW Rhodora “Jackie” Alcaraz are now asking for help from the government. Alcaraz is still in the ICU after being trapped in a fire in Tai Po, Hong Kong where he suffocated and inhaled thick smoke while rescuing his baby.

Alcaraz had just arrived in Hong Kong on November 25 and had only been working as a babysitter for one day when the tragedy struck. According to her sisters, Rachell and Corie Toñacao, they have not yet received any clear updates from OWWA or their sister's agency. They are now relying on information from relatives in Dubai.

The family is calling for the cooperation of OWWA and the OFW agency to provide them with clear information about Alcaraz's condition. They also request that one of them be allowed to go to Hong Kong to personally watch over their brother while he recovers.

The OWWA Regional Office delivered food packs and rice to Alcaraz's family. But his siblings said the OFW needed help more for his medical treatment, not for his family. According to them, Alcaraz still has many devices attached to his body and he is still far from recovering.

Despite what happened, the family is proud of Alcaraz's actions, who is now considered by Hong Kongers as a “heroic babysitter.” She did not abandon the three-month-old baby and came out of the fire hugging the child whom she wrapped in a wet blanket. The family continues to request immediate help and clear information from the authorities.
