20-year-old pregnant Maria Margaret Zamora was injured after being swallowed by a sinkhole in front of her in Barangay Masarawag, Guinobatan, Albay, Wednesday morning, November 12. She was six months pregnant when the ground suddenly collapsed under her feet.
Her grandmother, Maria Theresa, heard her granddaughter's screams and immediately went out to help. Maria Margaret's body was submerged almost to her waist, and it was sinking slowly because of the soft ground. Grandma Theresa called for help from her neighbors.
It took more than 30 minutes before rescuers were able to lift Maria Margaret out using a ladder. She is currently in the hospital and undergoing an ultrasound to see the condition of the baby. She also has wounds on her body. The grandmother was also injured after falling while rushing to help.
Grandma Theresa said that during typhoon Kristine, there were two large sinkholes behind their house. The river bank on the side of the house was also gradually collapsing. The MDRRMO and MGB Bicol have already visited the area to investigate the danger.
Grandma Theresa is calling for them to be given a relocation site because Barangay Masarawag is always in danger due to the raging lahar and debris from Mayon volcano during typhoons.
