The auction of seven luxury cars owned by Curlee and Sarah Discaya has been rescheduled for November 20, according to the Bureau of Customs (BOC). The vehicles can be viewed at the BOC Port Users Confederation parking area in Manila until tomorrow.
The auction will be held at 10 a.m. at the Office of the Commissioner (OCOM) building in the Port Area. According to the BOC, the auction aims to return to the people the revenue that is rightfully theirs.
Discayas is among 15 contractors that got P100 billion or 20% of the P545-billion budget for flood control projects starting in 2022. Of the seven luxury cars, the black Rolls-Royce Cullinan 2023 has the highest floor price of P45.314 million.
Customs Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno said corrupt personnel at the BOC are helping importers of misdeclared luxury vehicles. They are allegedly using a scheme to declare false port entries and fees, as well as tamper with X-ray images of the vehicles.
In total, there are 13 luxury cars in the custody of the BOC, six of which have questionable payment certificates. According to Sen. Pia Cayetano, there appears to be an “inside job” at the BOC in the smuggling of misdeclared luxury cars.
