A police captain was killed while another policeman was wounded after being shot by suspects in Barangay Sudlon 2, Cebu City on Saturday. The incident occurred while conducting a surveillance operation against a gun-for-hire group.
According to the PNP-CIDG report, the operatives were monitoring the movements of the suspects' vehicle when it suddenly stopped and opened fire on them with a high-powered firearm. As a result, Police Captain Joel Hernan Deiparine was killed, while Police Executive Master Sergeant Artchel Tero sustained minor injuries.
Police Major Helen Dela Cruz, CIDG spokesperson, said the suspects apparently noticed someone following them, so they suddenly stopped and opened fire. The CIDG strongly condemned the brutal attack and emphasized the dangers police officers face in their duties.
The manhunt operation for the suspects is now ongoing. The Cebu City government, Police Regional Office 7, and an anonymous donor have offered a ₱500,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators.
Captain Deiparine was awarded the Medal of Excellence in recognition of his courage and dedication to duty. The CIDG promised to arrest the suspects and fight for justice for their colleague.
