
Indonesia was rocked by a magnitude 6.0 earthquake on Tuesday night. The quake struck at 11:49 pm, 156 kilometers east of Surabaya on the island of Java. It had a depth of 13.9 kilometers.
The epicenter was near Sidoarjo, where an Islamic school collapsed the day before the quake. Three people died and more victims are still being searched for under the rubble. It is unclear whether the quake affected rescue operations.
Residents and guests at hotels in Sidoarjo left their rooms after feeling the tremors. According to one witness, he noticed the lights moving so he immediately left in fear.
According to the Indonesian Meteorology and Earthquake Agency, there is no threat of a tsunami. Four aftershocks were recorded after the earthquake, including one with a magnitude of 4.4.
Indonesia is prone to earthquakes because it is located on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an area where tectonic plates frequently collide.
