The so-called ‘Mushroom Murderer’ Erin Patterson, 50, was sentenced to life in prison with parole after 33 years for the deaths of three people after eating poisonous mushrooms.
He was caught after serving beef Wellington with death cap mushrooms in 2023 at a dinner with his in-laws Don and Gail Patterson and aunt Heather Wilkinson. Three died while Heather's husband, Pastor Ian Wilkinson, was the only survivor.
Judge Justice Christopher Beale said Patterson caused severe trauma and no remorse, so he deserves only the harshest sentence. He will have to wait until he is 83 years old before he can apply for parole.
After the trial, Pastor Ian, the sole survivor, thanked those who had provided support. He said he carries a heavy sadness every day because of his wife's death.
Patterson currently has 28 days to appeal the verdict. His case has attracted widespread attention from Australia to various countries.
