The basketball journey of Sonny Estil was full of ups and downs. From playing for La Salle Greenhills in high school, he moved from school to school because it was difficult to get playing time. He even made it to the MPBL as part of the Pampanga Giant Lanterns.
This Sunday, Estil is among the 122 players who will participate in the PBA Season 50 Draft at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall. Previously unknown, he rose to prominence after becoming the PBA Draft Combine MVP and was also included in the Mythical Five. At the Combine, he showed off his skills as a 6’3 winger and recorded a game-winning layup for Team A-2’s 37-35 win over Team D-1.
“I hope I get more recognition. I hope someone hires me. My dream is to play in the PBA, to help my family,” said Estil after accepting the MVP award. He added that he never stopped working even though his college career was difficult, and hopes that all the time in the gym was worth it.
He's not resting anytime soon either because he's still participating in the MPBL Slamdunk Contest this Saturday. “I'm very lucky and thankful to the Lord and my teammates. They gave me this opportunity,” he added.
If selected, it is possible that Estil's professional career will begin and he will achieve his dream of entering the PBA.
