73% of Filipinos Support Sex Education in Schools
A new survey said that 73% of Filipinos agree that children should be taught proper sex education in schools. This includes topics such as sexuality, sexual health, and family planning. The goal of such education is to help students make responsible decisions about their health and relationships.
Support was highest in Metro Manila, reaching 84%, followed by Luzon with 78%, while Mindanao had 67%. There was also no significant gap in support based on wealth or status in life—from the wealthy class ABC to the poorest class E, most were still in favor.
According to the data, 87% of youth aged 18-24 supported sex education, while only 66% of those aged 45-54 agreed. This shows that younger people are more open-minded about accurate information about sexuality.
There was also not much difference in support based on religion. Among Catholics, 73% were in favor. Among Muslims, 74% agreed, although 16% were opposed. Among members of the Iglesia ni Cristo, 70% agreed.
According to a child rights group, it is time to pass a bill to prevent early pregnancy and implement Comprehensive Sexuality Education nationwide. This is essential to provide young people with sufficient knowledge to protect themselves against abuse, early pregnancy, and diseases like HIV.
In addition, based on PSA data, girls aged 10 to 14 are getting pregnant by men older than them. Therefore, proper education is important to prevent abuse and keep young people safe.
