Doctors are warning against leptospirosis as heavy rains and flooding continue in the country. According to the Pediatric Nephrology Society of the Philippines, this is especially dangerous for children who drown in floods that may be contaminated with rat or animal urine.
The bacteria can enter the body through wounds or abrasions on the skin that have been soaked in water. Some of the symptoms of leptospirosis in children are fever, abdominal pain, red eyes, jaundice, little urination, and difficulty breathing.
Parents are advised to immediately take children who have been submerged in the flood, even just once, to the health center. Immediate treatment is important to prevent complications.
According to experts, even if there are no wounds on the feet, it is advisable to take 2 tablets of Doxycycline 100 mg within 24 hours after entering the flood. It is free at health centers so don't ignore it.
“Let's be careful, let's not add to the number of people with leptospirosis. Consult immediately if you have symptoms,” the Pediatric Nephrology Society added.
