Pasig City declared a red alert on Monday, July 21, after water levels rose at the Wawa Dam due to continuous rain from the southwest wind, according to Mayor Vico Sotto. From 8 a.m. As of 12 p.m., the water level had risen by 1.22 meters and reached 134.06 meters, almost reaching the critical level of 135 meters.
In Mayor Sotto's Facebook post, he said they are monitoring the Wawa Dam because it is close to the overflow level. If it overflows, the Marikina River, which flows through the barangays in Pasig, will also rise.
At 1:53 p.m., the alert was raised to second alarm after the water level in the Marikina River reached 16.20 meters. According to Montalban mayor Ronnie Evangelista, the Upper Wawa Dam has started to spill over, so the flooding is now being felt more in Marikina and nearby cities.
Barangay Santolan and Sta. Lucia are likely to be the first to be hit by the overflow. Barangays around the floodway are also on alert. Residents are advised to remain calm and comply immediately in case an evacuation is implemented.
PAGASA has issued an orange rainfall warning for Metro Manila and neighboring provinces such as Rizal, Bulacan, and Cavite, warning of heavy rains and possible widespread flooding. Classes and government work have been suspended starting 1 p.m. in affected areas.
