Jail officers in Manila caught a female visitor trying to smuggle in 12 plastic sachets of tobacco hidden inside turon and maruya. This happened on Sunday, July 13, at the Manila City Jail Annex, according to a report by the BJMP-NCR.
The woman, identified as "Jen", was immediately banned permanently from visiting the prison. The BJMP said this is in accordance with the rules of the visitors’ regulatory board to prevent illegal activities.
The BJMP-NCR issued a statement in their Facebook post:
"No sweet escape for contraband in turon!"
They added, security is tight and they do not tolerate this type of violation. Anyone who violates may be charged and completely lose the right to visit.
The news also went viral on a Philippine Reddit community, where many netizens left hilarious and hungry comments. One said, "Respect for turon!" while others even craved the turon because of its delicious and caramelized appearance.
Reminder of the BJMP since 2020, cigarettes and tobacco are prohibited inside prisons and are considered contraband. So don't try to smuggle it in — no matter how sweet it is wrapped in a turon.
